The Patriot Guard Riders have been invited by the family of Robert "Archie"
Leroy Purvis Sr. , U.S. Marine Corps veteran, to stand in silent honor for
his service then escort to the cemetery for the interment.
Robert entered the U.S. Marine Corps January of 1944 in theatre during
WWII, having served in battles, engagements, skirmishes, expeditions with
action at Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands and was honorably discharged, with the
rank of Corporal January of 1946.
Decorations include the Good Conduct Medal.
During World War II, thousands of service members were involved in the
secret program to build an atomic bomb, the same project that DTRA traces
its roots back to known as the Manhattan Project. Thousands more were part
of the U.S. occupation of Japan immediately following the dropping of two
atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Japan's unconditional surrender.
After the war ended, through decades of the Cold War, many more troops were
involved in atmospheric and underground testing of nuclear weapons and who
were or could have been exposed to radiation during their occupation of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki or while participating in a nuclear weapons test
during their service to the nation. Starting in 2019, the Secretary of
Defense honors these 550,000 veterans, or their next-of-kin, with an Atomic
Veterans Service Certificate, Archie was one of those heroes.
On the 8th of April 2021, Robert was awarded the Atomic Veterans Service
Certificate.
Robert served our country with honor, it's now our turn to honor him.
